ISSF Shooting at The JRA

The Jamaica Rifle Association is a members’ club which fosters the development of the shooting sport fraternity. This, therefore, means members are offered exclusive rights to training and range equipment this however is not a deterrent to the average sport shooting enthusiast. Our aim here at the JRA is to promote the sport by encouraging persons to come out and try their hand at this ever-growing sport from an early age as 10 years old.

Presently at the Jamaica Rifle Association, we shoot the discipline of 50m Rifle Prone (Smallbore Rifle) for both Male and Women. With new developments in the Olympic decisions, members of the rifle team have sought it fit to adapt shooting styles such as our Three-Position Counter-Parts.

The Smallbore rifle group at the JRA currently shoots the 50m Rifle Prone (Formerly called the English Match) as outlined by the International Sport Shooting Federation (ISSF). This event requires the shooter to fire 60 shots in 55 minutes while trying to hit an area half the size of a one-dollar coin 50m away. All this is done using a .22 rifle with iron sights and the naked eye. The highest possible score is 600 if scored in integers or 654 if scored in decimals (10.9 is the highest shot value).

The 50m prone is shot at various levels of competitions ranging from the Copa del Caribe regionally to the Pan American and Commonwealth Games and at the very top the Olympic Games every four years. Athletes wishing to compete at the Olympic Games must shoot a Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) of 587/600 or 614/654.

At the club level the group trains most Saturdays on Range 1 starting at 11:30am. The group is always looking to expand and welcomes new shooters and interested persons to join the group and start shooting with us.

COMING SOON

With recent developments of a 10m Air Range the association has set sights on venturing in the discipline of 10m Air Rifle and Pistol. This too will drive the growth of sport shooting in Jamaica, earning Jamaica its name on the international board as our prone shooters have.

The New AIR PISTOL/RIFLE RANGE, RANGE 4

Once you have decided to be a member of the Smallbore group you may use the rifles that are available at the club to train. Over time as you become a better shooter and better understand the sport, you may choose to purchase your own rifle. It is up to you the shooter to equip yourself with a rifle that fits you comfortably and is ideal for you as an individual shooter as no every shooter shoots and position themselves differently behind the rifle. Your options of rifles range from the less expensive basic target rifle to the premium quality rifles such as those shot by the top shooters at the club and across the globe competitively.

The Anshutz 1913

This rifle is relatively accurate, inexpensive and can be shot for years with no problems. As you progress, you will eventually experience the limits of the rifle and may seek to equip yourself with a rifle from one of the major brands available. These brands include Anschutz, Feinwerkbau (FWB), Bleiker and Walter. These rifles are all built on the principle of adjustability and are able to perfectly fit the style of any shooter.

In the end, however the rifle is still just a piece of equipment. To be able to get the best overall results, the enter shooter and equipment system need to be at a high level.
